Top 10 Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020 | 26/01/21

Yes, I’m here again with another Top 10 Tuesday post. I’m trying to get back into taking part in the weekly challenge as I love how it brings the book blogging community together!

This week, we’re going to be talking about all of the new-to-me authors whose books I read in 2020. Most of these authors are ones that I should have read a very long time ago, and because I’m awful, I’ve only just gotten around to them. I’m actually surprised I read books from 10 new authors. I usually stick to authors that I know and love (which is stupid, I know).

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish list prompt originally hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

The topic for this week is:

New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020

The rules are simple:

  • Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
  • Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to The Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
  • Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
  • Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.

So, to kick things off, we have a mix of authors that I should have really gotten around to a long time ago, but then we have Lori M. Lee and her novel: Forest of Souls who is an author that I haven’t heard of before! This book was included in one of the Fairy Loot boxes, and I quite enjoyed it!

Yes, I had only just read Nevernight. It’s despicable of me, I know. I figured that 2020 would be the year that I would read the whole trilogy but alas, that wasn’t the case, and I only ended up reading the first book. I really enjoyed Nevernight. The footnotes threw me off a little bit, but I ended up getting used to them.

I remember being on a bit of a downer after I had finished The Diviners series, and I wanted something else that tackled the supernatural. One of my best friends recommended the Lockwood & Co, series by Jonathan Stroud, and OH MY GOD, this series is one of the best things ever.

Tiffany D. Jackson has written so many books, but I remember Allegedly being the book of hers that I wanted to read the most, and I had actually bought the book from Barnes and Noble when I went to New York. It has now become one of my favourite books of all time. Oh, and the audiobook is perfection.

The End of Men is an e-arc from NetGalley, and it was really the title that jumped out to me and made me request it. Lemme tell you, this book is so… hard-hitting with the virus killing off men, but then seeing women tackle the problem is empowering. Christina Sweeney-Baird is definitely an author to keep your eye on.

I know that Sorcery of Thorns wasn’t Margaret Rogerson‘s first book, but this was the one where the premise really stood out to me. I listened to the audiobook whilst following along with the physical book (which is another one that was included in Fairy Loot), and after reading Sorcery of Thorns, I’m definitely ready to read her other books.

I had to read Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo for my Masters and I LOVED IT SO MUCH. If you haven’t read this book yet, please please please read it. It’s so beautiful, and I’ll definitely be reading all of Evaristo’s work.

Spectacle is the type of novel that is everything I could want in a book and Jodie Lynn Zdrok writes the murder mystery genre SO WELL. I genuinely thought that I would read the second book straight away, but obviously… I didn’t… Because I’m stupid.

Sadie was a book that was on the top of my TBR for a very long time, and I actually listened to the audiobook, which is something that I definitely recommend as the audiobook is amazing. Courtney Summers has this amazing way of creating SO MUCH TENSION, and her writing is just so good!

Criers’s War by Nina Varela was a book that was on nearly everyone’s TBR. Again, I listened to the audiobook for this and followed along with the physical copy. The romance in this book is to die for, and the fantasy element of this book is so beautiful. I read the sequel THE DAY it came out as I couldn’t wait to get back into the world.

  1. I hope you get a chance to finish the Nevernight series! It was fabulous, and I’m really looking forward to Kristoff’s upcoming book this year! I really enjoyed Sorcery of Thorns last year, too! (And Silas. *swoons*)

    Here’s my TTT post.

  2. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that they stuck with “comfort” authors in 2020, which makes total sense!

I listened to SPECTACLE on audio at the beginning of 2020 and … I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it either, but I did get tired of listening to it as it seemed to go on and on and on and on … I also didn’t love SADIE, although I’m in the minority on that one. Maybe I’m just really, really picky! LOL.

I’m glad you found some great new authors to love. I hope you find even more this year.

    Happy TTT!

  3. Nice list! Bernadine Evaristo was on my list too. And I have an ARC of The End Of Men on my Kindle to read very soon. Glad you found some great authors in 2020!
