Illumicrate Unboxing | November 2020

Who doesn’t love a good book subscription box, eh? You get loads of bookish goodies, and when it arrives every month, it feels like your birthday/Christmas and it’s amazing. It’s like a present from you to you.

Anyway, let’s get into the unboxing!

The theme for this month’s Illumicrate was ‘Spellbinding Stories’.

As usual with sub boxes, there is a spoiler card inside that tells you the theme for the month and also what you can find inside the box, but I never read this until I have seen every single item, as I don’t want to spoiled!

The first item that I picked out of this months Illumicrate was this beautiful Christmas tree ornament designed by Her Paper World. It’s inspired by This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. I’ve already hung it on my tree in my room and it looks amazing!

When I saw a big cardboard box within the Illumicrate box, I had no idea what it could be. But, when I opened it up, I saw this gorgeous ceramic book pot designed by Chatty Nora. I’ve put it next to the other book pot we received a few months ago, and they look beautiful standing next to each other.

What would a book subscription box in 2020 be without a face mask? I had to let out a small chuckle when I saw it in this months Illumicrate. It’s such a beautiful design by Stacey Mcevoy-Caunt and was inspired by Circe by Madeline Miller.

I genuinely had no idea that there was going to be TWO BOOKS in this months box. The first book was Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, a book that has been on my TBR ever since it was released. I have heard such amazing things about this book and I can’t wait to get around to it.

After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.

A flying demon feeding on human energies.

A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.

And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.

The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.

She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

The penultimate item in this months box was this GORGEOUS BOOK SLEEVE which is inspired by Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor was designed by Pauhami. I love book sleeves so much. I have so many, but I just can’t get enough of them. They’re so handy whenever I go to YALC, or whenever I go travelling to keep all of my books safe.

AAAANNNNNNNNDDDDD… the book of the month is The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow. This gorgeous edition has sprayed edges, and is signed by the author. There was also supposed to be an exclusive hidden cover, but something went wrong in the printing and unfortunately, we don’t have it. This standalone fantasy sounds amazing!

In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters–James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna–join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.

Thank you to Illumicrate for a box filled to the brim of bookish goodness. I can’t wait for next months box which is themed ‘A Legacy to Protect’ and TWO BOOKS, sprayed edges, and will be signed by the author.

Believe me guys, you do not want to miss out!
