First Impression Friday | 14/09/18

If you’re not aware of what First Impression Friday is, it was created by Joe at JW Martin – Storeys of Stories where, every Friday, he talks about his first impressions of his current read. I actually think that I’m going to do this bi-weekly because, at the moment, I don’t think that I’m going to be reading books that quick due to university.

I also think that – where Joe has said that he will just come back to his FIF post and link his reviews – I’m going to come back to the post, and just write if I was wrong or right. So I have my predicted ratings, and then I’m going to write my actual rating and a couple of sentences on what I actually thought. But I will link my full review as well (once it’s written!)

I’m writing this post quite late as I’ve only just started a new book! This week, I finished reading Heart of Mist and Wicked Like a Wildfire. You can see my predicted rating and my actual ratings for them in last weeks FIF post.

Today, I started reading Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria on my phone because it’s an e-arc that I was approved of on Netgalley. Since it’s coming up to its release date, I thought that it was about time that I started reading it!

Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Sorai

In the city of Eldra, people are ruled by ancient prophecies. For centuries, the high council has stayed in power by virtue of the prophecies of the elder seers. After the last infallible prophecy came to pass, growing unrest led to murders and an eventual rebellion that raged for more than a decade.

In the present day, Cassa, the orphaned daughter of rebels, is determined to fight back against the high council, which governs Eldra from behind the walls of the citadel. Her only allies are no-nonsense Alys, easygoing Evander, and perpetually underestimated Newt, and Cassa struggles to come to terms with the legacy of rebellion her dead parents have left her — and the fear that she may be inadequate to shoulder the burden. But by the time Cassa and her friends uncover the mystery of the final infallible prophecy, it may be too late to save the city — or themselves.

At the time of writing this post, I’m only 7% of the way through Beneath the Citadel, and so far we’ve met our main characters and have been introduced to a rough idea of what the book is going to be about.

I think the problem I face now – being nearly 23 – is that protagonists in YA Fantasy always seem young to me. Don’t get me wrong, I love YA fantasy, but the protagonists in Beneath the Citadel are 15/16/17, and that just feels really young (?) to me now that I’m getting older.

But so far, I’m enjoying the story. It’s gone through 4 different POV’s at the moment so I don’t know whether it’s going to stay like that (flitting through the perspectives), or whether the POV is going to settle on just one character.

I really am hoping that I enjoy this book because I have heard so many good things about it, and there’s loads of hype surrounding it, so the pressure IS ON!

I’ll be back next week (or in 2 weeks…) to share my first impressions of the book that I am reading at the time! Check back to this post next week to see what my actual rating of Beneath the Citadel is!

Until next time…
