First Impression Friday | 21/09/18

If you’re not aware of what First Impression Friday is, it was created by Joe at JW Martin – Storeys of Stories where, every Friday, he talks about his first impressions of his current read. I actually think that I’m going to do this bi-weekly because, at the moment, I don’t think that I’m going to be reading books that quick due to university.

I also think that – where Joe has said that he will just come back to his FIF post and link his reviews – I’m going to come back to the post, and just write if I was wrong or right. So I have my predicted ratings, and then I’m going to write my actual rating and a couple of sentences on what I actually thought. But I will link my full review as well (once it’s written!)

I’m writing this post on the Tuesday because of scheduling posts and all that… So yes, I started this book on Tuesday because it was the day that the book was released and I couldn’t wait to get around to it. And that book was…

Escaping from Houdini from Kerri Maniscalco (Stalking Jack the Ripper #3)

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.

But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?

I have nothing but the highest expectations for Escaping from Houdini. Since I gave the first book a 4.5 and the second book a 5, I’m expecting the third to be nothing short of a 5-star novel. Kerri Maniscalco’s writing never ceases to amaze me. I’m currently listening to the audiobook for this, and Nicola Barber does such a fantastic job at voicing all of the characters and making you feel like your in the world of Audrey Rose and Thomas. So far, I’ve listened to 3 hours and the storyline has really gripped my attention. The only thing I had trouble with was remembering exactly what had happened in Hunting Prince Dracula, but after a little bit of research, I figured it out, and then it was all back to being okay. So far, the mystery has been set up brilliantly and I have no idea who the killer could be. Now… I know that the title says Escaping from HOUDINI, but I don’t think that Maniscalco will be THAT obvious in giving away who the murderer is, so I guess that I’ll just have to wait and see!

I really am hoping that I enjoy this book because I loved the previous two so there is a lot of pressure for Maniscalco to live up to the previous two books. But I’ve got a feeling that I’m going to LOVE Escaping from Houdini.

I’ll be back next week (or in 2 weeks…) to share my first impressions of the book that I am reading at the time!

Until next time…
