March 2018 Book Haul

March 2018 Book Haul

So I did a thing… I decided to give up buying books for lent. The following books are ones that I actually pre-ordered and they just arrived in March. I wasn’t actually going to give up anything for lent, but I decided to give up buying books to really challenge myself. And in my defence, I actually pre-ordered these books in January or something like that, so I didn’t buy any book at all in March!

Anyway, let’s just get on with the haul…

Reflection by Elizabeth Lim (Twisted Tales #4)

What if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld?

When Captain Shang is mortally wounded by Shan Yu in battle, Mulan must travel to the Underworld, Diyu, in order to save him from certain death. But King Yama, the ruler of Diyu, is not willing to give Shang up easily. With the help of Shang’s great lion guardian ShiShi, Mulan must traverse Diyu to find Shang’s spirit, face harrowing obstacles, and leave by sunrise–or become King Yama’s prisoner forever. Moreover, Mulan is still disguised as the soldier called Ping, wrestling with the decision to reveal her true identity to her closest friend. Will Mulan be able to save Shang before it’s too late?

Will he ever be able to trust her again? Or will she lose him–and be lost in the Underworld–forever?

Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend (Nevermoor #1)

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she’s blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks–and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It’s then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city’s most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart–an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests–or she’ll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (Legacy of Orïsha #1)

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

And there we have it! Those are all of the books that I pre-ordered (and one from Fairy Loot!) that arrived in March! What books did you buy this month? Did any of the ones that I bought catch your eye and somehow end up on your Goodreads list and then in your basket? Let me know in the comments! I’m hoping to do something similar in April and give up actually buying books and just relying on my pre-orders. I’ve done all of my pre-orders for this year, so if I can just keep to those and not buy books then I’m all good!
