Escaping From Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco (Stalking Jack the Ripper #3)

I have been waiting to read this book for so long. Because I have to paperback versions of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula, I have to wait for the paperback version of Escaping from Houdini… Which means that I have to wait an extra month to get my hands on a physical copy. BUT AUDIBLE IS A LIFESAVER. I pre-ordered the audiobook for Escaping from Houdini because I listened to the audiobooks for the previous two books and absolutely loved them. Nicola Barber is a fantastic narrator. I’m about 20% of the way through, and ugggghhh I am so happy to be back in this world and back with these amazing characters.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover a travelling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.

But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?

Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria

I started reading this book because of the hype that’s surrounding it prior to its release and I was also approved by NetGalley to read it before publication. So of course, I was very intrigued as to what this book was about. I’m 12% of the way through and so far it’s ok… It’s not completely capturing my attention but I’m willing to stick with it to see if it gets more exciting.

In the city of Eldra, people are ruled by ancient prophecies. For centuries, the high council has stayed in power by virtue of the prophecies of the elder seers. After the last infallible prophecy came to pass, growing unrest led to murders and an eventual rebellion that raged for more than a decade.

In the present day, Cassa, the orphaned daughter of rebels, is determined to fight back against the high council, which governs Eldra from behind the walls of the citadel. Her only allies are no-nonsense Alys, easygoing Evander, and perpetually underestimated Newt, and Cassa struggles to come to terms with the legacy of rebellion her dead parents have left her — and the fear that she may be inadequate to shoulder the burden. But by the time Cassa and her friends uncover the mystery of the final infallible prophecy, it may be too late to save the city — or themselves.

Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popović (Hibiscus Daughter #1)

Ok, so this book definitely didn’t live up to my expectations. I had heard so many amazing things about this novel, but there was just too much purple prose for me to fully enjoy it. The book didn’t pick up its pace until about 60% of the way through – which is a shame – but I am intrigued to see what happens in the sequel, Fierce Like a Firestorm.

All the women in Iris and Malina’s family have the unique magical ability or “gleam” to manipulate beauty. Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, while Malina interprets moods as music. But their mother has strict rules to keep their gifts a secret, even in their secluded sea-side town. Iris and Malina are not allowed to share their magic with anyone, and above all, they are forbidden from falling in love.

But when their mother is mysteriously attacked, the sisters will have to unearth the truth behind the quiet lives their mother has built for them. They will discover a wicked curse that haunts their family line—but will they find that the very magic that bonds them together is destined to tear them apart forever?

Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer (The Oremere Chronicles #1)

This was a definite surprise. I do love a good fantasy, and I hadn’t heard a lot about this series so I was willing to give a new series ago that hadn’t had any hype attached to it, and wasn’t well-known within the book community. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT, and I need the second book right now. It’s been released in paperback, but since I listened to the audiobook for the first book, I want to listen to the audiobook for the second book as well.

In a realm where toxic mist sweeps the lands and magic is forbidden, all Bleak wants is a cure for her power.

Still grieving the death of her guardian and dangerously self-medicating with alcohol, Bleak is snatched from her home by the Commander of the King’s Army, and summoned to the capital.

But the king isn’t the only one interested in Bleak’s powers.

The leader of an infamous society of warriors, the Valia Kindred, lays claim to her as well, and Bleak finds herself in the middle of a much bigger battle than she anticipated.

A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

WEEEELLLLLL… I Do need to start reading books for my university course so that I can get ahead. I did start reading this book, to be honest. I’ll be honest, I read the first page. There was a lot of religious imagery and language that I don’t understand, so it’s going to be one of those books that I have to keep a dictionary close by…

In a nightmarish ruined world slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infant rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From here the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes. Seriously funny, stunning, and tragic, eternally fresh, imaginative, and altogether remarkable, A Canticle for Leibowitz retains its ability to enthral and amaze. It is now, as it always has been, a masterpiece.

It’s nice to keep you guys updated on what I’m reading, and even though I do an end-of-the-month wrap-up, you never get to see what I’m reading during the week.

Until next time…
