Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish list prompt originally hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. The theme for this week is:

September 25: Books By My Favorite Authors That I Still Haven’t Read

I’m one of those readers that don’t read hyped, new books as soon as they come out. I’m going to be completely honest with you, I still haven’t read Illuminae or the Grisha trilogy. See? Point proved. I’m so slow. There are just so many books on my TBR pile that I just kind of read what I want and read the ‘new’ releases when I feel like it, rather than feel pressure to read them as soon as they come out so that my blog is up-to-date.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

I absolutely love Strange the Dreamer, and I’m just surprised at myself for not reading this trilogy. I own all of the books but I just haven’t gotten around to them yet. Here’s hoping that I get around to them soon.

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore

The Graceling Realms series were so good (apart from Fire, I didn’t really enjoy that one), so I’m excited to read Jane, Unlimited. I don’t own it yet, but it’s a book that I’m excited to get to. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure what it’s about. All I know is that it’s by Kristin Cashore and that’s enough for me to know for me to buy it.

Jane has lived a mostly ordinary life, raised by her recently deceased aunt Magnolia, whom she counted on to turn life into an adventure. Without Aunt Magnolia, Jane is directionless. Then an old acquaintance, the glamorous and capricious Kiran Thrash, blows back into Jane’s life and invites her to a gala at the Thrashes’ extravagant island mansion called Tu Reviens. Jane remembers her aunt telling her: “If anyone ever invites you to Tu Reviens, promise me that you’ll go.”

What Jane doesn’t know is that at Tu Reviens her story will change; the house will offer her five choices that could ultimately determine the course of her untethered life. But every choice comes with a price. She might fall in love, she might lose her life, she might come face-to-face with herself. At Tu Reviens, anything is possible.

This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you will know how much I love The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and also how much I’m looking forward to The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy. I do actually own This Monstrous Thing, it’s a BEAUTIFUL hardcover copy, and it sounds like something that I would enjoy so much.

In 1818 Geneva, men built with clockwork parts live hidden away from society, cared for only by illegal mechanics called Shadow Boys. Two years ago, Shadow Boy Alasdair Finch’s life shattered to bits.

His brother, Oliver—dead.

His sweetheart, Mary—gone.

His chance to break free of Geneva—lost.

Heart-broken and desperate, Alasdair does the unthinkable: He brings Oliver back from the dead.

But putting back together a broken life is more difficult than mending bones and adding clockwork pieces. Oliver returns more monster than man, and Alasdair’s horror further damages the already troubled relationship.

Then comes the publication of Frankenstein and the city intensifies its search for Shadow Boys, aiming to discover the real life doctor and his monster. Alasdair finds refuge with his idol, the brilliant Dr. Geisler, who may offer him a way to escape the dangerous present and his guilt-ridden past, but at a horrible price only Oliver can pay…

The Diviners by Libba Bray

The only book that I have read by Libba Bray was Beauty Queens and I really enjoyed it. It was such a fun read. Even though The Diviners is a completely different type of series, I’m still intrigued to see what Bray’s writing is like when it’s a historical fiction/fantasy novel.

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City—and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.

Evie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.

As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened.

Turtles all the Way Down by John Green

John Green is one of those hit or miss authors for me. I loved Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and I really enjoyed The Fault in our Stars… But The Abundance of Katherines wasn’t good at all, so I’m a bit wary of going into Turtles all the Way Down. However, I have heard some amazing things about it, so hopefully, it will be good.

Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis. Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts. In his long-awaited return.

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Okay, so the only book that I’ve read by Marissa Meyer is Cinder. I haven’t even finished the Lunar Chronicles series. Yes, I am an awful human being, an awful reader, and an awful book blogger but please give me some slack. There ARE SO MANY books to get around to. BUT, I DID really enjoy Cinder, and I love a good sci-fi novel, and I do love superheroes, so having a book written by a great writer like Meyer with a mix of sci-fi and superheroes is something that I’m all here for.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

From Twinkle with Love by Sandhya Menon

When Dimple Met Rishi was one of my favourite contemporary reads from last year. I love Menon’s writing style, and I love all of her characters and how she conveys strong women of colour who aren’t afraid to go after what they want in life.

Aspiring filmmaker and wallflower Twinkle Mehra has stories she wants to tell and universes she wants to explore, if only the world would listen. So when fellow film geek Sahil Roy approaches her to direct a movie for the upcoming Summer Festival, Twinkle is all over it. The chance to publicly showcase her voice as a director? Dream come true. The fact that it gets her closer to her longtime crush, Neil Roy—a.k.a. Sahil’s twin brother? Dream come true x 2.

When mystery man “N” begins emailing her, Twinkle is sure it’s Neil, finally ready to begin their happily-ever-after. The only slightly inconvenient problem is that, in the course of movie-making, she’s fallen madly in love with the irresistibly adorkable Sahil.

Twinkle soon realizes that resistance is futile: The romance she’s got is not the one she’s scripted. But will it be enough?

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

I’m actually planning on doing a re-read of the whole Shadowhunter series books soon. I was going to do it over the summer but I never got around to it because of working and blah blah blah (excuses, I know). But I HAVE read The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices… I just haven’t read The Dark Artifices. One day, I’ll read them… I just have a feeling it’s not going to be in the next few months.

In a kingdom by the sea…

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

Hero at the Fall by Alwyn Hamilton

Hero at the Fall is a book that I’m going to get around to in the next few weeks. I’ve already got the physical copy and the audiobook, and I’ve already re-read the first two books ready for my read of Hero at the Fall, so I AM SO EXCITED to finish this series.

When gunslinging Amani Al’Hiza escaped her dead-end town, she never imagined she’d join a revolution, let alone lead one. But after the bloodthirsty Sultan of Miraji imprisoned the Rebel Prince Ahmed in the mythical city of Eremot, she doesn’t have a choice. Armed with only her revolver, her wits, and her untameable Demdji powers, Amani must rally her skeleton crew of rebels for a rescue mission through the unforgiving desert to a place that, according to maps, doesn’t exist. As she watches those she loves most lay their lives on the line against ghouls and enemy soldiers, Amani questions whether she can be the leader they need or if she is leading them all to their deaths.

House of Furies by Madeleine Roux

The only book of Roux’s that I’ve read is Asylum and I love a good YA thriller/horror novel and Madeleine Roux’s writing is just amazing and Asylum had me on edge the entire time. House of Furies is her second horror YA series and one that I NEED to get around to very soon.

After escaping a harsh school where punishment was the lesson of the day, seventeen-year-old Louisa Ditton is thrilled to find employment as a maid at a boarding house. But soon after her arrival at Coldthistle House, Louisa begins to realize that the house’s mysterious owner, Mr. Morningside, is providing much more than lodging for his guests. Far from a place of rest, the house is a place of judgment, and Mr. Morningside and his unusual staff are meant to execute their own justice on those who are past being saved.

Louisa begins to fear for a young man named Lee who is not like the other guests. He is charismatic and kind, and Louisa knows that it may be up to her to save him from an untimely judgment. But in this house of distortions and lies, how can Louisa be sure whom to trust?

  1. Awesome list! There are so many books on here that I really want to read, ugh I need 48h in a day, so I can read more. 😀 On the top of my list are: Lady Midnight, The Diviners, This Monstrous Thing, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. 🙂

    1. I know! Sometimes I feel like the publishing industry should take like a year-long rest so that we can catch up on the books we still need to read without any more amazing books being published! xx
