Saga Vol. 7 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Saga Vol. 7 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Saga seems to be the only graphic novels that I review lately. It’s just because they are so amazing and the only graphic novels that exist right now for me. I just absolutely love them and this volume may be the best one so far.

“The War for Phang” is an epic, self-contained Saga event! Finally reunited with her ever-expanding family, Hazel travels to a war-torn comet that Wreath and Landfall have been battling over for ages. New friendships are forged and others are lost forever in this action-packed volume about families, combat and the refugee experience.

Collecting: Saga 37-42

So let me just get one major thing out of the way. This volume was just waaaayy too emotional for me to handle. That. Ending. Ruined. Me. And whenever I think about Saga now, I always think of the ending to this volume and it makes me want to cry. My heart cannot deal with it. WHY DID BRIAN K VAUGHAN THINK THAT IT WAS OKAY TO DO THIS TO HIS DEDICATED READERS?!

“If a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, then a family is more like a rope. We’re lots of fragile little strands, and we survive by becoming hopelessly intertwined with each other.”

― Brian K. Vaughan, Saga, Vol. 7

The emotional ending – even though it was painful – was just one of the brilliant things that contributed to volume 7 being the best volume so far (in my opinion). Volume 7 just had everything that I wanted. Love, sass, true character development, raw emotion, beautiful writing and a brilliant plot. For part of the plot, we go back to the narrative of The Will. He’s a character who – for me – does not deserve such a massive part of the narrative focus as his ‘mission’ seems pointless. After waking up in a coma and finding out that his sister is dead, he starts doing drugs and drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

The Will used to be such an awesome character, and now? He’s just pitiful. I honestly have no idea why he’s still even in the series as he doesn’t seem to be adding anything to the storyline at all. I feel the same way about Gwen, Sophie and Lying Cat’s role in the series.

Moving on from The Will though, there are some seriously weird things going on with Sir Robot (formerly known as Prince Robot IV). He’s been away from his son for six months which I can understand is absolutely heartbreaking for him, but the one thing that really does not make sense to me is this weird love-triangle. I simply do not get it. I know that it’s explained and wrapped up in volume 8, but in 7, it was just strange.

Once again, there is some brilliant artwork by Fiona Staples! LOOK AT THE CUTE MEERKATS!

  1. Thank you! Finally, someone else has the same thought process on The Will, it’s very validating. I know what you mean about Volume 7 being a standout, possibly even definitive, volume, however, it’s certainly an emotional gut-punch. I can’t wait for Volume 9 to come out 😀

    1. I just think that he’s a character that should be let go now. He worked for a bit and now he just doesn’t add anything… how do you feel about Gwen and Sophie?
