The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

I literally read this book a week ago and I’m struggling to remember what happened so that I can write this review. WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN TO ME! This is what happens when you read so much, you just forget everything. BUT, I can remember that I absolutely loved this book apart from a few tiny tiny things and it was a very nice ending to an amazing quartet.

All her life, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love’s death. She doesn’t believe in true love and never thought this would be a problem, but as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

*THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS THROUGHOUT*

If you read my review of Blue Lily, Lily Blue, you will know that I stated at the beginning of the post that it’s very hard to write a review about the third book in a series. Now, onto the fourth and final book, I really did try to write the review without any spoilers. I really did try, but it was just so hard because everything I wanted to talk about could be considered a spoiler.

I’ve been a fan of Maggie Stiefvater ever since the Shiver trilogy came out, and then The Scorpio Races and then The Raven Cycle. Each book that she writes just gets better and better.

“No homework. I got suspended,” Blue replied.
“Get the fuck out,” Ronan said, but with admiration. “Sargent, you asshole.”

– Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven King

Ok, so I think I’m going to start this review off by saying that a few things in this book disappointed me. First, WHERE WAS GLENDOWER?! I was so so so disappointed that there was no Glendower and I could just feel Gansey’s disappointment pour through the pages. I thought that he was going to curl up into a ball and cry. My precious Gansey 🙁 I was also slightly disappointed with the ending of the book. It seemed very very sudden and there was hardly any emotion. Stiefvater could have milked that situation so much. But instead, I just read over it and that was that. One moment, this major thing had happened, and then it was a year later (or something like that), and it was just too much too fast. Stiefvater should have left it before the whole one year later thing. I don’t know…. What do you guys think? And also, when Gansey died, and Cabeswater said that they were going to ‘re-make’ him, but they couldn’t re-make Gansey into a full human. So what is Gansey then? Is he human? Is he soulless? I DON’T KNOW AND THESE ARE THINGS THAT I NEED TO KNOW. This is why the epilogue should have been longer and better and should’ve had more information about the aftermath of it all.

ALSO, I NEED TO GET SOMETHING OFF OF MY CHEST. RONAN DREAMT UP CABESWATER?!! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?! EFKSDFKLSGFKSJDB FKS. Ronan must be such a powerful dreamer in order to dream and pull Cabeswater out of his dreams.

AND THE PYNCH SHIP SAILED! RONAN AND ADAM KISSED AND OH MY GOD I DIED INSIDE. THIS WHOLE REVIEW IS GOING TO BE CAPITAL LETTERS BUT I’M SCREAMING INTERNALLY. Just the description that Stiefvater gave of Ronan and Adam’s feelings for each other was enough to keep me alive for years and years. Ronan and Adam being together forever is all that I need in life. I mean, sure I’m glad that Gansey and Blue kissed, but like…. Gansey also died from that and the kiss was over in a sentence. Also… Now that Gansey is ‘alive’, can they kiss? Or does the curse still apply even though Gansey isn’t fully human (?). I don’t know, I’m very confused about that whole process.

“His feelings for Adam were an oil spill; he’d let them overflow and now there wasn’t a damn place in the ocean that wouldn’t catch fire if he dropped a match.”

– Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven King

So a lot of good things happened throughout this book: Ronan and Adam kissed, Blue and Gansey kissed, Blue found out that she was a tree (I ALSO NEED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE FACT THAT BLUE IS A TREE?!), Maura is okay, I loved the whole demon thing and I liked the character of Henry and how his character was developed more from Blue Lily, Lily Blue.

The ‘whole demon thing’ was actually very creepy and I thought that The Raven King was much more creepy than the previous 3 books. In some places, I was really weirded out by the demon and how it could persuade people to think and do things. You know… like that part where it persuaded Laumonier to kill his daughter…

I think Stiefvater needs to release some sort of companion codex thing to just give readers some more information about Blue being a tree and Cabeswater bringing Gansey back. If I had that information then this book would be a 5/5 and I would sell my leg for it.

Overall, this book was good. I want to say that it was better than Blue Lily, Lily Blue and I want to say that it wasn’t as good as it, but I DON’T KNOW! Because there are some definite issues with this book like the ending and the lack of information about certain things but the rest of it was just pure perfection. ESPECIALLY PYNCH. LONG LIVE PYNCH. It was a good final book for a brilliant series and I will definitely be re-reading this in the near future!
